Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) is a well known prebiotic, it is a non-digestible complex carbohydrate that provides nourishment for the friendly bacteria, particularly the lactobacillus and bifidus bacteria, stimulating the growth and activity of these bacteria. Both families of bacteria are a dominant group of friendly bacteria within a healthy gastro-intestinal tract, they account for more than 80% of the gut flora. Lactobacillus bacteria are predominantly found in the small intestine, whereas the bifidus bacteria colonies mainly the large intestine. Gut flora play an important role in the body, they support the digestive process, bowel function and detoxification, and are involved in the absorption of nutrients and synthesis of certain vitamins.
